How setting up an SMSF works

Our SMSF specialist accountants handle the paperwork and the ATO side of a new self managed super fund, step by step, so the fund is compliant from day one.

1

Trustees & deed

Choose individual or corporate trustees, put the trust deed in place, and have each trustee sign their consent and ATO trustee declaration.

2

Register the fund

Register with the ATO as a regulated fund and obtain its ABN and TFN.

3

Bank account & strategy

Open a bank account in the fund's name, and document a written investment strategy for the fund.

4

Run it each year

Keep the records, prepare the financial statements, arrange the independent audit by an approved SMSF auditor, and lodge the SMSF annual return.

SMSF accounting, not financial advice. We look after setup, administration, compliance and tax. Whether an SMSF suits you, and how it invests, is a decision to make with your licensed financial adviser — we're happy to work alongside them.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is a self-managed super fund?

An SMSF is a private super fund you run yourself, with up to six members, giving you direct control over how your retirement savings are invested.

Do you give investment or financial advice?

No. We handle the accounting, administration, compliance and tax for your fund — we don't provide financial or investment advice, and we're happy to work alongside your licensed financial adviser.

Is an SMSF right for me?

It depends on your balance, your appetite for the responsibility involved, and your goals. There's no legal minimum balance, but an SMSF tends to make more sense once you have enough to invest — we'll help you weigh it up honestly.

What are my ongoing SMSF obligations?

Keeping proper records, valuing assets at market value, preparing the fund's financial statements and lodging its annual return each year. We manage all of this for you.

What does an SMSF accountant do?

An SMSF accountant keeps the fund's records, prepares its financial statements and member statements, calculates its tax, lodges the SMSF annual return and coordinates the annual independent audit — so you, as trustee, stay compliant.

Do I need an accountant for my SMSF?

The law doesn't require one, but as trustee you're responsible for the fund's records, financial statements, annual return and a yearly audit by an approved SMSF auditor. Most trustees use a specialist SMSF accountant so nothing is missed.

Do you audit SMSFs?

No. Each year an SMSF must be audited by an independent approved SMSF auditor, so we don't audit the funds we look after. We prepare the fund's accounts and annual return and coordinate the audit with an independent auditor, so you still deal with one team.

Do you look after SMSFs outside Sydney's CBD?

Yes. From our Norwest and Sydney CBD offices we look after funds across Sydney — including Parramatta and the Hills District — and work online with trustees elsewhere in Australia.
